Step by step guide of IVF process

/ / Articles

IVF has been around for many years and we all are aware of the basic idea of it. If you are thinking of opting for the IVF process, then read along to know the steps of the process.

Step 1:

  • You will be starting to self-administer the level of FSH with or without the LH by making use of a diabetic-style pen injector.
  • The hormone is responsible for stimulating your ovaries and making them produce a lot of eggs than it produces normally.
  • The main aim is to retrieve mature eggs as much as possible during the surgery of egg collection as it will increase the likelihood of a woman becoming pregnant.

Step 2:

  • During the entire treatment, a fertility specialist will be regularly monitoring your hormone level through blood tests.
  • A patient will be undergoing many ultrasounds to aid your specialist in determining the size and number of the ovarian follicles.
  • These cells produce eggs in the ovary and the tests will be determining when the egg collection surgery will take place.

Step 3:

  • After the fertility specialist confirms that a patient is having the optimal size and number of follicles and proper levels of hormones, he will be scheduling the egg collection.
  • Ovulation will be initiated by administering a trigger injection that contains hCG 36-38 hours before the procedure.

Step 4:

  • The procedure of egg collection is an outpatient one and is completed with twilight sedation. It will be taking 15-30 minutes for completion and you must have someone to take you home after that.
  • On the exact day of the procedure, your partner also has to provide a sample of fresh semen unless there is any use of donor sample.

Step 5:

  • The collected eggs during the process of surgical removal are moved to the laboratory by making use of sterile techniques.
  • All contents are put into some petri dish and prepared for the next sperm with a specialised culture.

Step 6:

  • The next day, the embryologist will be assessing the number that got fertilized and the doctor will be contacting you to inform you how many embryos you are having.

Step 7:

  • Five days after the procedure of egg collection, the embryo transfer will occur. Sometimes it may take place earlier.
  • Similar to egg collection, the transfer of an embryo is also a same-day process.
  • It will not need any sedation.
  • During the process, a fine catheter will be inserted via the cervix, and the developed embryo will be delivered to the uterus of a woman under the guidance of ultrasound.
  • Embryos that have developed but not been transferred are appropriate for freezing.
  • All frozen embryos can get transferred later

Step 8:

  • Within 2 weeks after the transfer of the embryo, a blood test is conducted for determining if a woman is pregnant.
  • It will be conducted even during a menstrual cycle.
  • A woman will be finding out if she is pregnant, on the same day the test is conducted.
  • If the IVF procedure is successful, the IVF specialist will be scheduling an appointment for an ultrasound within two weeks.
