Period pain is often dismissed as “normal.” But when the pain is severe, persistent, or begins to interfere with everyday life, it may be a sign of something more.
One possible cause is endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes and surrounding pelvic tissues and, in some women, can impact fertility.
1. Severe Period Pain
Some discomfort during menstruation can be normal. However, intense cramps that make it difficult to work, study, sleep or carry out your daily activities should not simply be ignored.
2. Pain During or After Sex
Deep pelvic pain during or after intercourse can sometimes be associated with endometriosis, particularly when it occurs repeatedly.
3. Pain During Bowel Movements or Urination
If you regularly experience pelvic pain while passing stools or urinating, especially during your period, it is worth discussing with a gynaecologist.
4. Very Heavy or Irregular Periods
Heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods or bleeding between periods can have several causes. Endometriosis is one possibility that may need to be evaluated.
5. Chronic Pelvic or Lower Back Pain
Endometriosis-related pain is not always limited to your period. Some women experience ongoing pelvic, abdominal or lower back pain.
6. Difficulty Conceiving
For some women, infertility may be the first reason they discover they have endometriosis. The condition can affect the reproductive organs and may make conception more difficult.
7. Persistent Fatigue or Digestive Symptoms
Bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea or significant fatigue may occur in some women, particularly around menstruation. These symptoms can also have many other causes, so proper evaluation is important.
Don’t Normalise Severe Period Pain
Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have endometriosis. But persistent or severe symptoms deserve medical attention.
Early evaluation can help identify the cause of your symptoms and, when appropriate, allow treatment to begin sooner.
If period pain is affecting your life or you are struggling to conceive, talk to an experienced fertility and reproductive medicine specialist.
